What does a typical wedding schedule look like?

January 11th, 2025

A typical wedding schedule varies depending on the couple’s preferences, traditions, and venue, but here’s a general outline of events that might occur during a wedding day:

1. Morning: Preparation

  • 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM: Bride, groom, and wedding party begin getting ready (hair, makeup, wardrobe, etc.)
  • 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Photographers may take "getting ready" photos (bride, groom, wedding party)
  • 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Vendors arrive (florist, cake, etc.) and final details are arranged.

2. First Look (Optional)

  • 12:00 PM: If the couple chooses a "first look" (seeing each other privately before the ceremony), this would occur at this time.
  • 12:15 PM: Pre-ceremony photos of the couple.

3. Pre-Ceremony Photos

  • 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM: Photos with family, wedding party, and individual portraits.
  • 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Final preparations before the ceremony, guests begin arriving.

4. Ceremony

  • 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM: Guests take their seats.
  • 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM: The ceremony takes place (processional, vows, ring exchange, recessional).
  • 3:00 PM - 3:15 PM: Newlyweds exit the ceremony, guests head to cocktail hour or reception.

5. Cocktail Hour

  • 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM: Guests enjoy drinks and appetizers while the couple takes more photos (often family portraits, wedding party shots, etc.).

6. Reception

  • 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM: Guests are seated for the reception. Introduction of the couple, first dance.
  • 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM: Dinner is served (buffet or plated).
  • 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM: Toasts and speeches from family and wedding party.
  • 6:00 PM - 6:30 PM: Dancing and entertainment begin (often the couple’s first dance followed by dancing with family, wedding party, and guests).

7. Cake Cutting & Special Traditions

  • 7:00 PM: Cake cutting, followed by dessert or a late-night snack.
  • 7:30 PM: Special dances (father-daughter, mother-son), bouquet toss, or garter toss (optional).

8. Party & Dancing

  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM: The party continues, with dancing, socializing, and more music.
  • 10:00 PM - 10:30 PM: Last dance (couple may have a special final song).

9. Send-off

  • 10:30 PM - 11:00 PM: Couple departs for the honeymoon or hotel, often with a grand send-off (sparklers, confetti, etc.).

This schedule is adjustable depending on factors such as the venue, cultural traditions, or any specific preferences the couple has for their day.
